I swear I didn't plan this but, I'm currently watching Pretty in Pink. While I was sitting here organizing a nice collection of adorable Valentine's Day clothes for the shop, I kept pausing on this photo and..I just couldn't bare to sell this dress. I love it - the color, the shape. Also it was my first and only prom dress. I have a certain love affair with Valentine's Day, it's my favorite holiday. It makes me sad when people say they hate it (single's awareness day, or whatever). But, I think regardless of relationship status, there's nothing wrong with setting aside a day to appreciate the precious people (and dresses) in your life. Plus, why would you avoid something that gives you an excuse to wear pink and eat too much chocolate? Exactly, you wouldn't.

Well it seems that winter (winter being low 60's/high 50's) has finally hit the central coast, which makes me glad. I don't often find myself yearning for certain types of weather anymore. It's so unpredictable here anyway, it would probably just be a waste of time to guess what's going to happen next. So now for my quiet Sunday night I'm going to eat leftover chicken, listen to too much music, and drink too much tea. How do you all like to spend your Sunday evenings?

Christmas has always been a sort of melancholic holiday to me, and so far this year seems to be no different. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea and season and everything. Christmas carols, old movies, the little baby Jesus and the general national effort to decorate all our houses and be a little nicer. But the actual day of. . .I just always end up sad somehow. I was feeling pretty rotten, driving between families and haunting carols on the radio. But then after I came home things started to seem a little better. Me and my dad decorated the tree and watched the Twilight Zone. And of course there was whiskey cider. I'm hoping this mellowness transitions into tomorrow. Oh, and we realized we don't have any cookies for Santa. Christmas Trader Joe's potstickers are just as good, right? I think so.

Anyways, I'm glad I got to wear this little dress. Bright red, gold buttons, non-sensical novelty print. . .it's the ideal Christmas outfit. Although, I'm equally excited about tomorrow's outfit..!

Aren't those little guys cute! A gift from my aunt. Also that's homemade granola I'm giving as gifts, cus I'm a cheapskate!

Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay is one of my most favorite places in the entire world. I've been to many beaches, but this one seems just..perfect. Anyways the pictures really don't do it justice. I always wonder about living there at some point, but I don't know if that would take some of the magic out if it. Every time I go there I feel so unbelievably quiet, in the best way.

We started out by eating at our usual breakfast place where you can play checkers while eating pancakes. I won, I just thought I would point that out. Then we spent the rest of the day crawling around the beaches, driving up and down the coast and even finding a few thrift stores. I made out with the best flannel shirt and a gorgeous leather satchel from the 50's. Anyways, I've basically been living in this wool skirt. It's really cozy and warm, and not to mention one of the best colors I've ever seen.

A Christmas Craft!

I don't really consider myself an experienced crafter, by any means. However, around the holidays I usually find myself littering my floors with paper snowflake bits and trying to get rubber cement out of my hair. I don't know what it is about Christmas but the Martha within usually starts to rear her ugly head by the middle of December. . . Anyways, I wanted to share these pretty cinnamon birds because I was really pleased with how they turned out.
It is, in fact, a Martha Stewart craft. However, it's not actually that hard to execute, unlike other Martha crafts I've attempted. You just throw together the dough, cut out the birds, let 'em dry for a few days, and then get wild with glitter. The end result smells wonderful and looks gorgeous. I gave these as gifts though I wish I would have made a few more for myself!
There are a few notes I have though. Either the cinnamon I had was extra dry, or the recipe is way off. I had to double the glue and just keep adding apple sauce til it came together. I would recommend making it in a Kitchen Aid mixer too, if you have one available. Also I made mine a little thicker for stability so it took longer for it to dry. Oh and I used rubber cement and q-tips instead of craft glue. Other than that it's pretty simple! Woo!!

I know there's nothing really mind blowing about this outfit, in fact, it doesn't even really match. . .but these are just a few items I can't stop wearing lately. Also I'll have to apologize for the awkward faces. It's funny you know, I've had this blog for two years but I still feel shy in front of the camera!

Anyways, today was SO SUCCESSFUL. After getting up early and getting coffee and a delicious scone (chocolate almond rose!), I ventured out to find a thrift store that Taylor told me to check out. I couldn't get over how lovely it was! After following a pretty tree-lined road for a while, you happen upon a series of buildings that include a nursery, "bargain shop", and community garden. Everything is so nicely arranged with lots of pretty furniture and dishes. I left with a bag full of loot including four 40's dresses, a pretty sweater, the most perfect faded rug, a cute little dish and a vintage platypus cookie cutter!! I didn't even know there was such a thing. Anyhow, I think I'm going to take proper photos tomorrow if I can catch some good light. Have any of you readers found some recent thrift treasures??

Oh boy, where do I begin about yesterday. . . it started out so incredibly lovely. I had been wanting to go to the sutro baths for the longest time, so I was so excited when we got to go! I guess being from California, we don't have much by way of ruins, so I was happy that there were some hiding right under my nose in San Francisco. I was so glad it was raining and stormy and beautiful. I even packed my wellies for the occasion (best decision ever). It really could have been a perfect day.

Basically it was a huge swimming complex built in the late 19th century, with seven different swimming pools. It burned down in the sixties, but you can still wander around the entire thing. Which I actually find shocking because it seems really really dangerous. But whatevs. . . Also part of Harold and Maude was filmed there. What's not to like??

So after doing all of our exploring, we came back to the car to find Max's window smashed in and my purse stolen. iPhone, iPod, debit card, id, favorite makeup. . .sigh. Not tom mention shards of glass everywhere. So, the day ended with going to the police station and a cold ride home. Wah wah. . .oh well, c'est la vie. It was still a really fun day, and Max was so sweet. Doesn't he look dapper in his sweater? Cutest boy ever.

Sorry I've sort of fallen off the map lately. I've had this silly cold turned stomach flu that I can't seem to shake! So I've just been laying around in a multitude of cardigans, doing recipe research and watching old horror movies. And. . .ya know. . .spending more time on tumblr than what's considered healthy. However tonight my mom and aunts are handing out candy so maybe I'll try and pull together some sort of costume and go gawk at the cute little costumes! Finally, I am home in San Luis Obispo. Til further notice. I am just so glad to be back in a place where I feel like myself. Anyways, these past few days have been mostly me trying (key word, trying) to unpack and get settled. In all honesty I've felt pretty awful since I've been back, mostly because I am really struggling with having to willingly move away from my boyfriend. But, this morning I woke up feeling a little less depressed so I decided to carpe diem. I guess it doesn't do much good to aimlessly wander around the house in a slip with a box of tissues and check your phone every 32 seconds anyway. . .

The dress is from one of my favorite local stores, Ruby Rose. It's obviously for a little girl but I love the print too much to not try and squeeze myself into it. The cardigan was a wonderful find from a thriftventure with my girl Sonja. She found the same exact one in black! And the shoes deserve to be worn more but I'm sort of too lazy to break them in. Oh, and that's my partner in crime, Maybelline (the cat). Oh! And I absolutely adore the big batch of succulents right next to our front door. The house is from the 1930's so I'd like to believe all the plants are that old too. I mean, they're probably not but. . .it's fun to pretend.

These were just some photos taken in San Jose yesterday. Max and I had a large thrift-venture/pilgrimage to one of our favorite vintage spots, Black and Brown. It was a hugely successful day. Not only because I came home with two bags full of clothes (some for the store and some for me!), but also because we happened upon a larger than life PAUL BUNYAN. Life doesn't get much better, I don't think.

Rainy Days

This little post should give you an idea of how bored I am. Just showing off a few of my favorite pins. The first one I scored at a thrift store, and I usually use it to adorn my favorite winter coat (grey wool, toggle buttons). I love how it looks all shattered, and the sweet little boys face. The second one I just got as a graduation gift from my mother. It belonged to my grandmother and we just found them buried in her sewing stash. I imagine she made them when she had a full house. There are actually a bunch of them, all with different buttons. The last charming group was an etsy discovery. They were on sale and felt the need to warm them up with my sweaters. I think my favorite is the kitty.
In other news I graduated and received an iphone! So feel free to follow me on instagram (roxannerosensteel). This also means that in a short week I will be moving from Napa, and the Bay area, to my lovely home in San Luis Obispo. So expect to see more store activity, and hopefully more blog activity in general. Hope that all of you in Cali are enjoying the rain. I'm crossing my fingers for thunderstorms later!

I am so happy today. It is the first day that feels like fall in Napa. It's raining, and dark. It all feels right. And with so many things that seem to be going wrong lately, I am completely welcoming the rain and the blustery days.

Yesterday will probably be one of the last of the city dates, but it was certainly a lovely one. I found a smattering of pretty, old things including that sort of decrepit pink hat. The veil is torn and it has a few stains but, I had to rescue it. I also found a sensible skirt from the forties and the most perfect high-waisted plaid pants. I think I'll have to work up some courage to wear them, though.

Anyways, sorry I've been a bit of a deadbeat blogger lately. I've been crazy busy with graduation in a week and weddings and almost cutting my finger off. You know, the usual things.

Sheesh, I just had to gush a little bit about these nostalgic photos from LAWRENCE. The golden hue and dreaminess makes me think it should be called something more like, "Things I'd Rather Be Doing". I've never been to Coney Island but I think I would like to visit now more than ever. But alas, I have no such dream life and am spending my free Monday feeling pretty useless. I think I might remedy this by making shortbreads and lemonade. I'll probably tidy the apartment too. Maybe even watch a movie, who knows! The thrills never stop in Napa!

Anyways, enough of my bummer attitude. I have been spending my free time rummaging for new lovely things to go in the store. These things may include some pristine 50's dresses, a perfect 70's Virgin Suicides dress, and a smattering of 40's gloves. Hopefully once I move from wine territory back to my San Luis Obispo homeland, I'll get the beauties up in the shop. I can't wait!!

Fancy Lady Things

Whenever I wear things like this I feel like referring to them as "fancy lady ___". Fancy lady coat, fancy lady gloves, whatever. It's funny though because when you look a little deeper, the purse has a broken latch, I wore the coat right out of a store (it was chilly!), and I hastily cut the shoulder pads out of the black dress while getting dressed. So, I definitely don't act like a fancy lady. . .but at least I sort of look like one.
Anyways, this was taken on another San Francisco jaunt, and I tried to document more. The delicious pastries are from Tartine (my favorite!), the candy colored lingerie is from Held Over, and the last photo was taken at an estate sale. I didn't find anything but, in the end, I mostly just like the opportunity to wander around someone's old house. Especially beautiful San Francisco ones! Oh and the coat. I saw it at Buffalo Exchange 3 weeks earlier, but resisted buying it (as I am trying to save funds). When we went back it was still there AND fifty percent off. I viewed this as a sign from God and snatched it up.

Yesterday was spent having another lovely Saturday in Napa. Max and I traveled to the community gardens to find edible flowers to candy. Sadly, we didn't find the right flowers. However, we did find lots of funny vegetables and so many cute strawberries! Then we went and saw Crazy Stupid Love, which actually ended up being really cute (plus I have a shameless girl crush on Emma Stone. . .) The movie was mostly funny, though I could have done without the dramatic rain scenes. Today we are being a little lazy and making chocolate cake. I'll be sure to post the recipe soon. Anyways, I hope you are all having a lovely weekend!!

Here's some hodgepodge outfit photos taken from a city date this weekend (excuse my gawkiness). I hadn't been back in San Francisco since my internship, so Max and I went back to all the old haunts. Next time I'll actually take some other photos because the vintage was just too pretty not to look at. Not to mention the adorable, all black Edwardian-esque outfit of the sales lady at La Rosa. Mmm, another pleasant weekend, but this time around I actually spent it in Napa, where I live. I usually travel to the Peninsula during the weekends, but not this time, so we did things my way- AKA, lots of treats! We started out by heading to Bouchon Bakery, a favorite haunt of mine. The hungry little sparrows that hop around the garden are probably more aggressive than the bakers behind the glass. Then we treated ourselves to lovely days spent going to charity shops, day trips to Santa Rosa, making thai iced tea ice cream, and picnic-ing with Italian sandwiches and messy cupcakes. Thought, my favorite part had to be watching Meet Me In St. Louis at three in the morning, curled up in a million blankets on the couch, yellow lamplight, and a sleepy boyfriend. Uff da, why can't everyday be Saturday?!

Warm Summer Nights

Just a quick post on what I've been wearing as of late. Something about being home in San Luis has me more inclined to run around in longer dresses and skirts, which is just fine with me. I love this one for the floaty shape and taupe color. And who doesn't love a good "Elisa Lou" on the tag?

The Rivieras - California Sun by Johnny Strychnine

I've recently become fascinated with a funny little store in Redwood City, CA, The Record Man. Max took me there over Easter weekend with the thoughts, "Now, could we not spend like. . .forever in here." (he knows me well) It's an unassuming store front on an unassuming street, but as soon as you walk in you are slapped in the face with the hoarder-esqe shelves of records and dingy smell (in the best way). The meandering little house is filled floor to ceiling, with rare copies, and no prices. There's turntables in every room, and you can sit on the floor and listen to any of them as you please. The downside, records start at 12 dollars! I was pleased just to sit and listen though. Anyways, upon returning home, and doing a little research, the place apparently has a history. Max and I missed the owner coming in by seconds, but according to the interwebs, he is a very temperamental man. He'll like, chastise you when you don't even say anything. Kind of makes me love the place more. Anyways, I urge you to read people's personal stories on yelp, they are sort of amusing.
Oh, and Max and I mostly listened to surf records, which caused us to attempt to record a cover "California Sun". We'll see how it goes. If it's any good, I might even share it with you darling followers.

As of late I've been obsessing over 1950's dressing. I just love the tangible poise flowing from the way 1950's girls dress themselves, it's so apparent. These photographs come from my vintage vogue, a fantastic photo archive of vintage magazine photos, among other lovely collections. I could spend hours not only studying the way they dress, but meditating on they way they position themselves, and the lightness in their faces. I think it's also nice to look to the past to remember how refreshing and beautiful longer lengths can be, especially when accompanied by a cinched up waste.

As for myself I am having a lazy day listening to this, watching this, and making something akin to this. Anyways, have a lovely day, and to my fellow Californian's, try to stay dry! (so much rain!!)

That Old Feeling

Time to remember that old feeling. It's still hazy, though. Time to straighten my shoulders, loosen my jaw and lighten my step. Due to nostalgia, sunny mornings, and naggings from a certain Taylor Kitto. . . I am returning to the blogging world (for realzies). I need to remember how to act somewhat natural in front of the camera lens. I need to recall the desire to wear beautifully impractical clothing (though it really never left).

Hiatus aside, I am back in gorgeous, forgiving Napa. Yesterday was spent wandering the quiet (enough) downtown and running through vineyards with the boy (looking dapper in a tweed coat). The sun shone on my face and I smiled at the dirt. My ankles missed being scraped by branches. Again I am delightfully mellow.

Winter Inspiration and an Interview

I think the San Francisco ways are seeping into my blood. I know this Sally Scott collection came out 80 years ago, so don't think I'm just super late on this bandwagon. But this is why I'm choosing to post it now. I think I "get" it now. You know how sometimes it takes along time for you to realize why a collection is good? Well, looking back on these photos, this basically sums up my life right now. This lookbook is perfect because, well, they're not trying too hard. It's just, effortless.

Perhaps it's my newly adopted ragamuffin ways, or my grungy little house full of grungy little indie kids, or the fact that my house is constantly 45 degrees. But now I find myself thinking less about "how much will people think I look nice in this outfit?" and more about "how many cardigans can I pile on before it becomes excessive?". I'm annoyed with the feeling like I have to always put on makeup. And I'm tired of people looking perfectly put together. So, it's more like new philosophies are starting to transform my style.

Today you would find me sitting in a dirty little cafe wearing long, wooly socks under a long pleated skirt with a smattering of grungy sweaters and even grungier hair. And that's just how I prefer it, at least for now.

Oh, and you can see an interview I did here for Triangle Y Triangle blog. My answers aren't very cool but it's my first interview so I'm pretty excited!

Lately I've been feeling inspired by long, pretty skirts. I see these girls flouncing around the Mission, or the pretty girls at Tartine wearing these long skirts. It looks so graceful, and interesting. I'm usually so focused on finding short length dresses and skirts, I don't even give long ones a chance. So today I picked up a pretty navy one at the thrift store, hopefully I can play around with it and show what I've come up with. If you have any long skirt inspirations, let me know!

And now on a completely different tangent, here's a brief update of my life. I've recently moved to the Mission district of San Francisco. I am interning at a restaurant Range. I am working under the pastry chef. We make beautiful desserts like pistachio brown butter cake with roasted damsen plums, peach leaf ice cream, whipped creme fraiche, huckleberry sauce and almond crocconte. Or bittersweet rose water souffles with cardamom ice cream and pistachio praline. I live in the most beautiful house. It has white washed walls and delicate linens. It is full of people and life. Currently my days consist of cold, drizzly San Francisco mornings. Drinking tea and eating granola, bananas, and soymilk. Running to the post office and the coffee shop. I work all night. On my days off I take the train to see a boy. I don't think there's anything I enjoy more than the woosh of the subway. Everyday I meet new people. Interesting people. And more and more I appreciate the strangeness and kindness of strangers. I've been documenting and I'm hoping to have some visual aids soon. I don't know if anyone cares about this blog anymore but, I still like having it. I deeply appreciate anyone who is reading this, too.

These are photos from this last weekend when me and Logan were excited to go out and have a good weekend of adventuring and roaming. It was terribly hot and I wanted to wear all of my recent lovelies. And I made Logan wear a bow tie. We decided to go to the mossy bridge I had been to before after getting hopelessly lost in the hills of Saint Helena. Then we went to my favorite local coffee shop to eat delicious tarts and pretend that we speak in South African accents. . .

Anyways now with my 19th birthday right around the corner, life is getting ever more hectic. But, before life actually gets hectic (and I have a few surprises!) my three week summer break will be a glorious rest. How are all of your summer breaks going? Any loveliness?

Summer dreams and poetry.

This summer I plan to sleep peacefully and spend a lot of time by the ocean. Also I'm going to try not to miss my new friends, or my new family, I should say. They all mean so much to me. I don't know how I'll last knowing that I won't wake up in the morning and see them.

And now a few thoughts on last night: It is sometimes far better to sleep in a mattress on the floor with 4 other people than by yourself. It is beautiful when you realize that life can always be interesting, and adventure will always be a part of your life. It is probably a better idea to go out of your way to ride red tandem bicycles to wherever you're going than traveling via car. It is fun to drink wine from other people's glasses, but not enough to get you drunk, just enough to leave a warm feeling in your heart and the lingering aftertaste. It is fun to return from a party to your own room, crash in your undies, and count on being woken up by your friends to go get coffee or see a movie.

From now on I will go and do and be.

Yesterday was the most lovely sunny day spent by the school gardens. Logan and I picked fava beans for my friend Nick, who later roasted them to be eaten whole along with nubbly little potatoes and fresh fish. And the rest of the evening was spent playing cards, scrabble, and going to sleep early(ish).

But today the sun has given way to rainy skies, but that's just fine with me. All the better to wear scarves and eat pizza and watch films in. I hope the rest of you are in good spirits. Tell me how you spent your Sunday!

Translucent rush of the window panes.

I was lucky enough to have my dad come visit me this weekend! I miss him so much. So anyways we drove up to Diamond Mountain and looked at the beautiful scenery and tried to avoid getting shot by guards of the pot fields (I've heard stories. . .) It was gorgeous and misty mellow with babbling brooks and moss covered walls.

Later we went to dinner at Ubuntu, which I have been dying to try! The restaurant/yoga studio is vegetarian, and uses many of its ingredients from it's own certified organic gardens. The fantastic thing is that it has 2.5 Michelin stars. It was quite honestly some of the best food we've ever eaten. It was, a symphony of food. My favorit e co urse was potato gnocchi and kumquat-mushroom a la greque, spiced 'garnet' yam, coffee espuma and radishes.

Bonus points for whoever knows what the title of this post is referencing!

In fact, I'm very much alive. Culinary school is the most blissful place. I adore it. My only problem is that I don't quite fit in. But, I'm just trying to be at peace with who I am. However, being here is perfect because, I just feel understood here, in terms of food. Also, it is so beautiful. And the food, THE FOOOD! Every mealtime is new and exciting. Favorites so far: Prime rib and yorkshire pudding, cactus and shrimp, sashimi, veal, homemade pasta, bread pudding, gorgeous plated desserts, frangipane tart (I'm a sucker for almond. . .), tamales, cinnamon and clove ice cream. The list goes on and on. I feel so privileged to be in the epicenter of food. There's a rumor going around that Chef Duff is here today for a chocolate conference! It truly is wonderful. Oh and what do we do at night? Make maple bacon funnel cakes, of course. Also, thank you for all of your encouraging comments, it has certainly made things a bit easier.

Anyways, this is some art from a favorite artist of mine Inga Birgis, who is also part of the band Seabear. Isn't she brilliant? And I am totally lusting after their new cd. I love her use of different elements.

Yes, it's true, I leave for pastry school on Saturday. It's in the beautiful Napa Valley, The Culinary Institute of America. I'm excited, yes, but also afraid. Afraid of change. Things aren't going so well, my boyfriend is well. . .no longer a boyfriend, but still a friend. Major family issues, a disappearing house, and constant Anorexia accusations are making it difficult to be ok. I feel a strange calm, but I fear that there will come a time very soon in which I'm going to lose it. . . *puts face in hands*

But, let's see about this fabulous school! It's stunning, in a great three story greystone building from the eighteen hundreds, previously a winery run by monks. It's surrounded by lush wine country and vineyards, as well as The French Laundry and Dean and Deluca. I'm so excited to learn, and make the most sincere, beautiful pastries. And in the end, if I end up having nothing else in my life, I'll have flour, sugar, butter and the sheer pleasure of plunging my hands into a bowl of flour, butter, and gruyere to make the most fabulous double apple pie with cheese in the crust. And I'll have God, and His will. So anyway, I won't be blogging for a little while, till I get settled.

I've been trying to find some clarity lately, as I sometimes feel that my life is crashing in on me. I'm trying to wake up earlier. I dunno, just get back to a purity I know I've felt, but I guess I'm just in a rut. Anybody ever feel like that? So awhile ago I found an old Holga at an estate sale. I was gonna sell it but. . .then I decided to try it for myself first. These are the only ones that turned out. Opening the envelope was kinda of like a little Christmas. . ! I don't really know a thing about photography but, it is surely fun! And I'm learning. I think the last one is my favorite. Today was a collecting of items that were mostly for December birthdays rather than Christmas shopping, but I am so pleased with what I got. I went to one of my favorite antique stores (pictured above) on the hunt for a vintage hat. One of the birthdays is a vintage hat party, how fun is that!? I didn't have much luck but I think I have another plan. I'll definitely take photos too. Anyway, now for some of my finds. . .

I found these saddle shoes at the thrift store. I was going to sell them but, I ended up having way too much fun wearing them!!

I didn't buy these little guys but if I had more money for silly Christmas decorations, I would.

The jasmine tea, black and white photos, ginger candy, melon gum, mug and Christmas card are all gifts to be given. Then those are some crystal things I've been wearing, one belonged to my great-grandma. Finally my winter gloves and soap because I've been concerned about my complexion. Oh and a little bow for good measure.

Grand Opening!!

Yes it's official, I've opened my etsy store!!! Currently there's only one item, but the rest are going up in the morning. I am so nervous, but so excited. I just don't want to mess it all up. Anyways, I hope you all check it out. Other than that I've just been doing little things like buying new lipstick (dark shades!), making paper snowflakes, and hiding from the cold. Oh, and me and Max went to our favorite Asian market where I picked up some fun little Christmas gifts, like jasmine tea and melon bubblegum. He purchased some pork buns (oh how we love the pork buns) and little crackers that were so hard that I'm pretty sure they're the same sort of thing that were eaten on the Mayflower.

Anyways, below is a photo of a velvet mini dress that will be going into the store soon. Also that is my favorite winter coat that I can't stop wearing, I believe it's from the 60's. I think it's the giant collar that makes me so happy. I'll try and get better pictures later.

Something I would really enjoy getting for Christmas is this lovely set of prints from the always wonderful Becky Filip. You may know her from the band the Honey Trees, but I know her as being a local hero, and one of the nicest people you'll meet. She has many other wonderful prints, and you might want to check out her style too, as it is always such an inspiration.
Anyways, I am so sorry for being a deadbeat blogger lately, but I promise it's all because I'm trying to get my store open. Should be today or tomorrow, but I'll let you guys know!

Chocolate Pomegranate Cookies

As the holidays are fast approaching, the inevitable cookie obligations will begin pouring in. So might I suggest these little gems. These will shock and awe with their dark, melding, and dare I say sexy texture and flavor. I tasted something similar at a cafe the other day and knew I had to recreate it at home. I'm pairing mine with a Russian black currant tea called Impra. It was a gift from my dad's Russian friends (I had never even met them!) when we last visited my sister in Los Angeles. They also gave me a loose leaf strawberry, all in their darling accents.

Ingredients

· 1 cup butter or margarine, softened

· 1 1/2 cups sugar

· 2 eggs

· 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

· 5 teaspoons pomegranate juice

· About 5 oz. Pomegranate seeds

· 2 cups all-purpose flour

· 2/3 cup baking cocoa

· 3/4 teaspoon baking soda

· 1/2 teaspoon salt

· ½ package choc. chips

Directions

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla and juice. Stir in seeds. Combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture. Stir in chocolate chips. Roll into 1-in. balls. Place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets. Flatten with a fork if desired. Bake at 350 degrees F for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are firm. Remove to wire racks.

And now a few pictures from my trip to L.A. in which I decided that I don't hate the city, but rather love it. You just gotta give it a chance. Like all cities, it's got layers. I've been all over the place- running around Westwood with my sister, speeding down Sunset (once I saw Tommy Lee, haha), driving through the lush mansion-filled hills overlooking the city, and all the little nooks and crannies. It's especially beautiful at night. Anyways, this is a picture of Amoeba music, the best record store in the world. I always get a rush when I'm in there. And this serendipitous feeling of "Dear Lord, I just knew there were people like me." Also that's me looking fried in the parking lot with one of my favorite hats and cardigans. . .

So I just had to add this. . .

Music Loves: Vampire Weekend

Yes, I have just returned from seeing Vampire Weekend and I have to say it was definitely one of the best concerts I've ever been to! I've seen many a good band (Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, Beirut, Death Cab for Cutie. . .) but this one was so much fun! Especially since it was in my hometown which pretty much never happens. The tiny venue (the always-frequented Downtown Brew) was packed to the brim and it was hyped up, jumping, sweaty, screamy, happy excitement. I especially loved the encore in which they played "Mansard Roof" and finished with "Walcott". The entire crowd was jumping and dancing. Also, they played a bunch of new songs from their upcoming album Contra and I have to say I loved them! One of them uses this funny T-Pain effect on Ezra's voice but it sounded so awesome. Ezra is even lovelier in person. . .

I am so sorry I don't have pictures of the actual thing. I didn't bring my camera, like a dummy.

Also I'm really cool and don't know how to center videos. . .

I always get a t-shirt for every concert I attend, it's tradition.

Belated Halloween

Yes I'm doing my Halloween post five days late, but, oh well. I was little red riding hood! My Halloween was very nice though, not too exciting. First I went to Max's house where his mom had made the coziest little set up outside with a television (to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas and Monster House), fifteen bean soup, and hot chocolate. Then we went to Noah's where I was made to sing lead of a rockband band named Sleazy Wednesday, which gave me enough frights for the evening. Then I went home to watch Charlie Brown and The Great Pumpkin with my dad at two in the morning. The Peanuts hold a certain, almost religious place in my heart and I draw quite a few social views from Linus (sincerity!). I was pretty proud to sport my cloak around Wal-Mart and K-Mart though, and even prouder to find a certain camaraderie among those who were dressed up. Sorry, this was so late!

As for today I'm just doing a little catching up, cleaning, enjoying my pumpkin spice latte, and doing some U.O. shopping. An additional 50% off all Women's and Home sale!! Now all this red cloaking around has got me quite obsessed with the color red. I've sort of been captivated after that September Vogue editorial. . .

Anniversary!

Allow me to gush for just a moment because yesterday was me and my boyfriend’s Anniversary! A year of Max has made me so very happy. Anyways, it was an anniversary extravaganza of fun and loveliness. I threw on my new lace dress that I love (and conveniently found in the little girls section for $5!) and my newest oxfords for the special occasion. First we went on a thrifting adventure all around town, though I didn’t find anything save a few awkward run-ins with acquaintances. We then went for a walk to this old childhood place of mine to take outfit photos. There used to be the most charming wooden swing on that tree and, I was a bit sad to see that it was gone. However it’s still as pretty as it always was, even though we couldn't stay long seeing that we had to sneak in to someone else's back yard to enjoy it. Then it was sushi at Yanagi’s and then home to watch Halloweentown II: Kalibar’s Revenge and Marie Antoinette (a winning combination?). Oh yes, Halloweentown, the Disney Channel four-part saga of the 90’s with it’s obvious plot flaws and horrendous costumes is a staple I watch religiously every Halloween. Yes, it’s absurd, but I think I can justify it with Debbie Reynolds and the fact that Mark Mothersbaugh did the music, right?

Anyways in other news, I am going to start an online vintage store! It's been in the works for quite sometime, but I still need to figure out the whole etsy thing. If any of you vintage veterans have any advice, please enlighten me! But to give you a preview I've got lots of boots and oxfords, the prettiest little dress, the cutest fall accessories, and a coat that I would take for myself if we had remotely cold weather here on the central coast.

Oh also I hope you all are liking the recent tunes I've added to the blog! Let me know if it's buggin' though, because I'll get rid of it if that is the case. Also for some reason there is some horrendous 15 second techno bit after Sondre Lerche's song so, sorry about that!
